Editorial and evidence standards
These standards describe the public operating principles behind Washington Field Guide. They are intended to improve traceability and maintenance, not to suggest that travel information can never become outdated.
Durable factual records should retain supporting sources, documented field observations, or an explicit unresolved status. Public outputs should be able to identify the records and evidence used to support material planning claims.
Missing information, weak support, conflicting sources, or incomplete verification should not be silently converted into certainty. The system may hold, qualify, restrict, or flag information rather than forcing publication.
Closures, weather, smoke, fires, road status, temporary operating changes, and similar conditions are time-sensitive. Durable pages should direct readers to current authoritative sources and identify when stored status is expired or insufficient.
On-the-ground observations can add important detail that official sources omit. They should be dated, attributed, scoped carefully, and distinguished from rules, agency statements, or universally reliable conditions.
Recommendations, comparisons, itineraries, and practical synthesis may be derived from multiple records. Editorial reasoning should remain distinguishable from factual source material, even when both appear in the same guide.
When material information changes, the preferred workflow appends new evidence, records what changed, rebuilds affected outputs, tests the result, and retains enough history to understand the correction.
Automated tools may retrieve, compare, classify, draft, format, test, or flag information. They do not become the original source, and their output is not automatically approved for publication.
Affiliate links, sponsored placements, partnerships, or compensated business listings should be disclosed. They should not require false claims, hidden alternatives, or the removal of practical limitations.
Evidence-backed does not mean risk-free.
Roads, weather, natural hazards, operating hours, regulations, land access, and physical conditions can change. Visitors remain responsible for checking official current information, understanding their abilities, following laws and closures, and making safe decisions.
Include the affected page or place, what appears wrong, when you observed it, and a source or documentation when available.
Send a correction
